Tane Mahuta and the Kauri Forest

Now, being into my trees and that stuff, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to see New Zealand's largest Kauri tree. Tane Mahuta means "the god of the forest" and quite rightly so, it is HUGE - 51m high with a girth of 14m and is estimated to be about 1,500 years old. The photo shows me standing in front of it and you can just about make me out in a blue top.

After this visit and a winding drive through the forest we head to the Kauri museum in Matakohe. It gives an insight into the kauri trees and the role they played in New Zealand's pioneering history and even a steam engine which was made in Colchester!!

After our day exploring we head back to Auckland for a stop over with our friend, have a lovely dinner, do some washing and bed. Goodnight from Auckland.
