Heading south...

Following our sound adventures we head to Invercargill which is on the south coast of the South Island. We follow the Southern Scenic Route and pass through Riverton, stopping for a coffee at Beach House Cafe and watch the surfers catching the gentle (and long) waves. We take a wander along the "high street" and in a shop window are 7 springer spaniel puppies which are for sale - they are the cutest things ever!!

We finally arrive in Invercargill and head straight to Bluff and out to Stirling Point. This is also where the Aluminium plant is that we saw the electricity being generated for. Now, although Stirling Point is not actually the most southerly point on the south island (that is Slope Point) it does have a sign post to match the one we visited at Cape Reinga (which is the most northerly point of the north island). London is 18958km away!

While in Invercargill we go to a shop where they have on display the Indian motorbike that was ridden by Burt Munro who is Invercargill's most famous son as on this bike he set the under-1000cc speed record on the Bonneville Salt Flats. You may have seen a film called The World's Fastest Indian staring Anthony Hopkins - this film is about his record!

We then head to Oreti Beach to the west of Invercargill where there is a fantastic wide beach which is wind blasted and hard enough when the tide is out to drive on.
