1-1-11

We are tired this morning after staying up late to watch tv but we are up and off and heading along the Southern Scenic Route as it passes along the Catlins. This area of coastline is really beautiful with sandy beaches, rocky cliffs and rolling grassland.

We start with a stop at Slope point which is the most southerly point on the South Island. We then head along to Curio Bay and Porpoise Bay, here we saw the most extensive and best preserved examples of a Jurassic fossilised forest in the water and luckily the tide is out enough for us to see the remains. We then head along to Nugget Point at the eastern end of the Catlins and climb up to the lighthouse and admire the view and spot a few sea lions on the rocks far below us. We then wander down to a hide overlooking a beach where the very rare yellow-eyed penguins live. We watch the beach patiently for some time but to no avail, we don’t get to see these rare creates. We then make our way up towards Dunedin.
