White Island

Today we woke up to a lovely sunny morning which was good news for us as we were booked on a tour out to White Island. White Island lies 49km off the coast and is the only active marine volcano in NZ. We head out on the boat and then transfer to the island on a rib. It is an incredible place, we have hard hats and gas masks (just in case!) and have our tour of the area. We see sulphur towers and deposits, fumaroles hissing and roaring as steam rises in to the air, an acidic lake, magmaheated water, bubbling mud - it is like walking on the moon. After our walk around the island we head back to the boat for some lunch and then a spin around the island which is home to thousands of gannets and petrel birds.
